Eight Track
Words and Music: Mark David Manders

I’ve been around, traveled some ground
But I always come back to McKinney
I grew up here, and after all these years
I got few regrets if any
Now Johnny was a hired hand, he came to work for my old man
When I was a kid some twenty years ago
And when the work was done he’d drag me along for fun
To every beer joint between McKinney and Plano
And he’d sing along with the eight-track
As we rolled down old Highway 5
Heading into town with those truck windows down
Man, I’ve never felt so alive
Now my mama always said the life that Johnny led
Was gonna wind him up in jail or worse
So it came as no surprise when heard of his demise
When a bar room brawl took a nasty turn
I was not around when they laid him in the ground
In a graveyard outside of McKinney
But sometimes late at night when the house is quiet
I close my eyes and relive the memory
And he’d sing along with the eight-track
As we rolled down old Highway 5
Heading into town with those truck windows down
Man, I’ve never felt so alive
