April’s Fool (5:02)
Words and Music: Mark David Manders

The first time April knew I was her fool
Was in this bar where she worked, I was in the back playing pool
April’s boyfriend and another man had an exchange
I should have walked away, instead I joined in the fray
April’s boyfriend pulled out a .44,
Left that man bleeding on the floor; man I hit the door
They sentenced him to Death Row last June
I watched it all on the News from April’s apartment room
And April when I look into your eyes
I don’t trust what I see
It’s like you got a spell on me
And April I know that I’m your fool
I’ll cheat and lie for you
But I ain’t gonna die for you
April knew all the back roads outside of Portales
I didn’t know my way around; I’d just moved to town from Dallas
We raised hell up and down that New Mexico state line
Driving down some old dusty road that only she would know
I’m not sure when things started headin’ south
There were rumors around town, mostly word of mouth
That April had another man on the side
I wanted to make her pay, but I knew I had to wait
And April when I look into your eyes
I don’t trust what I see
It’s like you got a spell on me
And April I know that I’m your fool
I’ll cheat and lie for you
But I ain’t gonna die for you
On the Evening News last week the governor revealed
That the death penalty in New Mexico had been repealed
When she went to work I raided her jewelry drawer
I went down to the pawn shop and bought myself a .44
I watched them as they left the bar that night
She hit the back roads; I trailed a little further behind
When she pulled over and finally killed the lights
I snuck up to the door and emptied my .44
And April when I look into your eyes
I don’t trust what I see
It’s like you got a spell on me
And April I know that I’m your fool
I ain’t gonna die for you
But I’ll do life for you
I heard the sirens over on the interstate
When the troopers showed up they were sportin’ Texas plates
I said, “What are you boys doing way over here in New Mexico?”
They said, “Son, you crossed into Texas about three miles ago.”
And April I still see your eyes
I’m stuck here on Death Row
They’re gonna kill me you know
April I guess I’m still your fool
I’m gonna die for you
But I’m gonna see you soon
