Last Night
Words and Music: Mark David Manders

Hung over on the couch again, feeling like a fool, Lord, you know I’ve been
Chasing a dream and losing sleep, I’m just a victim of the hours I keep
In twenty-five days I’ll be thirty years old, still ain’t found a job that I can hold
But I’ve held on through thick and thin to the one thing that I believe in
And last night we had a pretty good crowd
They were tapping their toes and singing out loud
They heard every song we came to play
I lost track of time but I suppose
We’d have played all night if that bar didn’t close
Nights like that don’t happen every day
Now I’ve played some dives where no one showed and I’ve made less than the bar tabs I’ve owed
I’ve played for free and just for the booze, it’s a little thing called paying your dues
And those nights I got lost on my way home and the days I spent so all alone
Call on me from time to time and end up in the words of a rhyme
And last night we had a pretty good crowd
They were tapping their toes and singing out loud
They heard every song we came to play
I lost track of time but I suppose
We’d have played all night if that bar didn’t close
Nights like that don’t happen every day
Now I’d like to shut her down for a week, rest up my voice, maybe get some sleep
But the chances of a vacation are slight when you’re trying to make a living playing music at night
So I spread my bills out on the floor, choose the ones to pay and the ones to ignore
I tell myself it’ll be all right then pick up my guitar and begin to write
And last night we had a pretty good crowd
They were tapping their toes and singing out loud
They heard every song we came to play
I lost track of time but I suppose
We’d have played all night if that bar didn’t close
Nights like that don’t happen every day
