Coast of Madagascar
Words and Music: Mark David Manders

Tucked away in a cardboard box behind the attic door
I chanced to find a book of rhymes from a hundred years before
And the tales I read came to life like a sail in the breeze
Lord Byron was my captain, his pages were my seas
And we’d sail across the waters
On the trade winds of time
And off the coast of Madagascar
We’d leave our misfortunes behind
There was something about a princess held captive by her foes
There was something in his verses that would not let me go
And as stately galleons poised to fight, sails stretching at the seams
I’d fall asleep in the light and I’d drift off in my dreams
And we’d sail across the waters
On the trade winds of time
And off the coast of Madagascar
We’d leave our misfortunes behind
Now my life is like a cardboard box filled with memories and rhymes
And I’ve lost track of the book I had but I can still recall his lines
And looking back I have to laugh as I let my pen run free
For I was much too young to fathom the course he set for me
When we’d sail across the waters
On the trade winds of time
And off the coast of Madagascar
We’d leave our misfortunes behind
